Winter Airport Operations - How CAK Stays Open

Winter safety and operations is crucial at CAK, it's in our core. Akron-Canton Airport's top priority is the safety and well-being of our Customers. That's why our team takes winter preparation and operations with the utmost seriousness.

Before the weather starts to shift from summer sunshine to cool fall breeze, preventative maintenance is conducted on all of our operational equipment and heavy machinery in May. Plus, our braking meter (Bomonk AMF3) is recalibrated in August so in the event of a rogue snow storm (hey, this is Ohio after all), we'll be prepared.

So while Northeast Ohio is rockin' flip-flops and sunglasses, our team is devising the plan to ensure 24/7 snow removal coverage when it arrives. In addition to maintenance of equipment and tools, we have also replaced and stocked our sand storage facility - airports can't use salt on the runways - and we've invested in 9,000 gallons of Potassium Acetate for freezing rain and icy conditions.

Although our team of experts have been here winter after winter, we know there is no room for complacency and have been practicing and preparing the CAK snow plan to ensure Customers get where they need to go. So plan that trip for winter. Let us handle the plowing, you handle the relaxing.
