Akron-Canton Airport 5K on the Runway Takes Off
CAK 5K on the Runway Raises $15,000 for Local Charities
GREEN – At the Akron-Canton Airport, typical air travel is 200+ miles, but this Saturday people will travel just 3.1 miles… on foot.
Over 2,000 runners, wheelchair athletes and walkers will take off on to the runway of the Akron-Canton Airport to complete the CAK 5K on the Runway.
The second 5k to ever be held at CAK celebrates 70 years of United Airlines’ commitment to the Akron-Canton community. To signify the commitment to the region, proceeds from the race will benefit MAPS Air Museum and The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
“United Airlines’ commitment to CAK is ever-growing, and we couldn’t be more thankful,” said Rick McQueen, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport. “In the past 70 years, they have allowed access to wonderful places like Chicago, Houston, Newark/New York but most importantly, they are a quick connection to the world.”
Along the course, participants will pass vintage military aircraft and enter the Ohio National Guard in which they will have the opportunity to shake hands with servicemen and women. After the race is complete, runners are free to enjoy the MAPS Air Museum.
“The contribution back to the community is why we love hosting this event,” said McQueen. “The race is fun, but what excites us most is handing over the check to charity and seeing how inspired attendees are by the airfield.”
The Akron-Canton Airport event registration is double that of 2016, when the event made its debut. The first event sold out in one weekend, then sold out a week after the release of additional registrations.
“The success of the CAK 5K on the Runway is attributed to the uniqueness of being able to access the runway,” said Jim Chaney, Race Director. “For a runner or walker, what makes this truly unrivaled is the opportunity to be surrounded by aviation history. It is a full experience rather than just another race.”
In addition to the CAK 5K on the Runway, the airport will celebrate United’s anniversary with traveling CAK Customers on Friday the 12th. The celebration will include refreshments and opportunities to win various prizes.
