Akron-Canton Airport Capital Improvement Receives AIA Recognition
American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Akron Chapter Design Awards Honorable Mention

Green, Ohio - Akron-Canton Airport’s latest capital improvement, a 2.7 million dollar ticket wing expansion, has received the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Akron Chapter Design Awards Honorable Mention for new construction.

Designed by SōL Harris/Day Architecture, of North Canton, Ohio, the new interior adds more than 1,800 square feet of circulation space, LED lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows. The exterior of the ticket wing features a dramatic glass canopy, wide sidewalks and easy wayfinding.

“The design of the ticketing wing creates a bright, open and intuitive experience that welcomes the traveler while providing a clear understanding of where to check-in,” said Burt Marzley, Design Architect, SōL Harris/Day Architecture. “The new translucent canopy floats like a wing above the new glass entry vestibule that leads into a concourse full of natural light and refined by LED lighting and high quality finishes.”

The AIA Akron Chapter Design Awards promote quality design, sustainability and AIA’s 10 principles of livable communities. Submissions are evaluated based on their aesthetic, functional, contextual and social characteristics of the design.

“We are fortunate to have an award-winning, local design and architecture firm right here in our community,” said Rick McQueen, Akron-Canton Airport President and CEO. “The SōL Harris/Day team’s understanding of our travelers and unique airport experience helped create a new Customer-friendly space that we’re proud to have. Our partnership is a long-standing one that we look forward to continuing.”

The ticket wing isn’t the only thing undergoing a major facelift. CAK’s gate expansion program is moving forward in 2018. SōL Harris/Day Architecture is also involved with the program to create a gate area that is fit for today’s travel and aircraft size. Replacing gates that were designed for aircraft of the 1950s, the new gates will optimize operations while further improving Customer experience.
