AKRON-CANTON AIRPORT SETS JUNE PASSENGER TRAFFIC RECORD

Green, OH: Welcome to CAK, Northeast Ohio travelers! For the sixth consecutive month, the airport has broken the previously established monthly passenger record. In June, 133,000 origin and destination passengers used Akron-Canton Airport compared to 132,000 in the same month last year. June was also the second best month on record at CAK. In contrast, national passenger traffic is down nearly 2.4 percent in June according to the Air Transportation Association. For the year, the airport has hosted 728,000 O/D passengers, a 7.6% increase compared to the first half of 2005.

"We consider this a vote of confidence from travelers in the region," said airport director Fred Krum. "Clearly passengers value a relaxing airport experience. Shorter lines, smaller crowds, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a bit more sense of calm during the busy summer travel season make Akron-Canton a better way to go."

AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines posted increases in June compared to last year. AirTran Airways' carries more passengers than any other airline from CAK. The airline flies nonstop to Atlanta, New York (LaGuardia), Boston, Orlando, and Tampa and offers connecting flights to 23 additional cities. Frontier Airlines flies to its westbound Denver hub aboard big, comfy Airbus jets with satellite TV in every seatback. Because these two low fare carriers have significantly reduced air fares in this market, CAK was ranked as the sixth least expensive airport in the country, in the US Department of Transportation's fourth quarter Domestic Airline Fares Consumer Report.

The airport opened its new, spacious, four-gate passenger concourse in early May. AirTran Airways operates its big jet flights from three gates and Frontier Airlines will operate from the fourth later this summer. The concourse is the centerpiece of the airport's $60 million, five-year STAR expansion project. Other elements of STAR included longer runways, a new baggage claim wing, additional car parking and a food court with national brands.
