Where are the Cracks? Runway Cracks that is!

For those who haven’t been out to the airport recently you might have missed our field maintenance crew sealing cracks in our roadways. Sure that takes time but what really is the killer is our runways. If you figure out the width of our taxi ways and runways in comparison to a average state road you would be looking at 37 miles of crack sealing. I asked Jeff, our field maintenance supervisor of many years, just what goes in to making it happen. Well besides a lot of hot sweaty days, the airport has about 5 to 6 weeks of a crew of 7 men and ladies filling those cracks from morning to evening. Then of course you have to keep the airport going so some of the work has to be done at night.  We did a rough estimate of the require materials and ended up with using about 10 tons of the stuff. Of course with oil products sky high the sealer doesn’t come cheap, it’s like 39 cents a pound, I’ll let you do the math.

It’s all part of the process to keep things in top shape here. For those who haven’t priced blacktop lately, it just went up a additional 7 dollars a ton as well, but who’s counting, we want your touchdown to be as smooth as your trip through the terminal. Enjoy!
