Welcome to My View from 1228!
Posted on 02/08/2006
This address was not one assigned by the U.S. Post Office but in literal terms represents the official MSL elevation of the Akron-Canton Airport. A known consent to pilots, a fixed reference point to our entire aviation community.
To me the number 1228 is a fixed reference point in my DNA. Since June 1957, when I first arrived at the Airport and experienced the old green Quonset hut terminal. I literally got to roam the place when my father, the station manager for Capitol Airlines at CAK, would have me tag along when he was called into work for “irregular operations” or when my mother and I picked him up from work.
Through this early association and various jobs starting in 1971 including flight kitchen and the ramp, the constant of airport and airlines has been continually re-enforced.
The View from 1228 will hopefully reveal a lot about this unique relationship I have had with this airport and the airlines that serve it -- from Capitol to AirTran Airways. This airport has a personality, a heart and soul, a character and pulse, and I am going to make it come alive to you. 1228 is not just an elevation, it’s an adventure filled with great characters and experiences, and like any other adventure the best days are still yet to come.
