Summer Weather Delays
Posted on 06/27/2006
Yes, it’s the time of year that we all wait for; blue skies, vacations, and picnics. But it’s also the time of year when most weather delays become a huge problem for carriers. Many would think that winter storms cause the most problems, but with modern equipment and seasoned professionals like our field maintenance employees here at CAK, the real weather problems come from summer thunderstorms. The seasoned traveler knows a few rules and tips that just might help moms and dads traveling with the kids to Disneyworld on AirTran Airways; tips that might help to make those delays tolerable.
First of all, know the weather expected at your departure airport as well as your destination. Thunderstorms can move quickly and when they are close to airports, look out! The next order of business is to check to make sure you flight is on time. This can be done by calling your carrier or if traveling from CAK, just go to our website and look under arrivals and departures for current information. If you have young children, plan for extended periods of idle time at the airport. Bring games that can keep their focus for extended periods; snacks also might be a wise carry on. If your flight is delayed, ask the airline if your aircraft has left its destination yet; many times this will give you a indication of how long the delay will be. Be proactive, when you see a long line at the ticket counter, immediately call the carrier, and try to be rerouted through the call center. With full flights this summer those who react quickly usually get the best results.
Remember, during these times the airline employees are also stressed, they really want to help, but keep in mind that honey does catch more flies than vinegar. Being upset with them will not get you on our way any faster. In fact many times during weather delays they are also waiting for information. Part of the problem is that many factors are involved in rescheduling delayed flights. Just a few include: fuel considerations, time slots for landing at airports like New York, and crew legality situations. The goal of the airlines is to get you there on time and, most importantly, safely; but Mother Nature is something that they can’t control, so let them do their jobs. Here’s to hoping that you have blue skies and safe travels this summer!
