CAK Connections

In this issue: CAK opens ARFF facility, wins social media award, learn about Southwest's boarding process and an update on American/US Airways merger.

The airline industry is ever changing. One big shift is towards consolidation. Airlines serving the mature U.S. domestic market are getting stronger by joining their networks, often to the benefit of the communities they serve. Two big mergers affecting us positively at CAK are Southwest/ AirTran and US Airways/ American.

Southwest acquired AirTran in 2011 and will complete the integration by the end of 2014. The combined network gives travelers more options and secures low fares for our region.

US Airways and American are seeking government approval for their merger. We are concerned though, that if the US DOT requires the new American to divest slots at Washington D.C. Reagan Airport, that our round trip could be at risk. We support this merger without arbitrary restrictions that aren't based on market success. Our D.C. service is very important to our community, as demonstrated by the high level of support and ridership.

Thanks for supporting CAK as the industry continues to evolve. We have exceptional fares, destinations and airline choice because of you, our customer.

CAK opens new ARFF Facility
Proud as punch! That's how we felt when 1,000 people helped us open our new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting/Operations Facility. Along with a ribbon-cutting, live fire demo and open house, CAK gave away Southwest Airlines gift cards, snow globes and water bottles to our special guests!

This new facility is where most CAK employees work; keeping our airfield safe and operating efficiently. It also houses most of our cool stuff like fire trucks and big snow removal equipment. Did you miss the party? You can view photos of the grand opening on our Facebook page here.

Hop aboard Southwest!
Wondering about how to board Southwest Airlines? It is easy peasy lemon squeezy

Check-in and you'll get assigned a boarding group (A, B, or C) and number (1-60). This is your spot in line. When your group is called, stand by the column with your number on it. Give the ticket agent your boarding pass as you approach the podium. Once on the airplane, pick your own seat. You'll be on your way to some fab destination in no time at all! Learn more in this video from Southwest.

We Support the New American Airlines
US Airways and American Airlines have announced their intention to merge, and we are 100% behind it. The new airline would be called American and be headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is considering, as a condition to approving the merger, forcing the airlines to divest slots at Washington D.C. Reagan International Airport (DCA). We strongly oppose this action. Travelers who now enjoy nonstop flights to our nation's capital from CAK could be forced to connect or drive to a distant airport for access, if this divestiture is required. We worked for nearly 25 years to secure service to DCA and we don't want to lose it now. Please join us in opposing this arbitrary condition to this merger.

The combined carrier would be the largest in the world. Read more about the traveler benefits of the new American here.
