Nearly 1.6 million passengers have flown through Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) in 2011, a record growth year in a growth era. Traveling at the airport has increased 300 percent in the last 15 years.
“One of the factors driving our growth is that we have the lowest average airfare in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Michigan and Indiana combined,” said Kristie Van Auken, the airport’s senior vice president and chief marketing and communications officer.
“We attract the customers with the low airfare , but it is really the customer experience...

Southwest Airlines said Friday that as its takeover of AirTran Airways is completed, Akron-Canton Airport is one of the facilities where operations will be changed.
Last May, Southwest purchased AirTran and said they would continue operating as separate entities until the first quarter of this year.
On Friday, Southwest said it intended to convert AirTran operations at 22 domestic and international airports to Southwest.
Akron-Canton was on the list. Sixteen airports did not make Friday’s list or were not included in previous announcements by the airline.
Airport spokeswoman Kristie...
Southwest to keep Akron-Canton Airport on its route map
Posted on 01/24/2012
Southwest Airlines said Friday that it will keep flying to Akron-Canton Airport and 21 other cities served by AirTran Airways as it combines the two airlines.
But Southwest said it will end service to a half dozen cities flown by AirTran, raising the total list of dropped cities to 15.
The Dallas-based carrier said some markets are not feasible with the current cost of jet fuel -- now at $130 a barrel, up 16 percent from a year ago.
