Green, OH: Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) marked the busiest April in airport history with passenger traffic surging 9 percent compared to 2011. For the month, 146,215 passengers flew in/out of CAK. That figure surpasses our previous best April (2011) by 12,241 passengers. It also marks the 13th record-breaking month in a row for CAK. Year-to-date passenger traffic is up 13 percent compared to the first four months of 2011.
“Thank you, Northeast Ohio!” said Rick McQueen, president and CEO. “We are so grateful that Customers continue to enjoy our low fares and relaxing airport experience. We are lucky to have exceptional airlines too- AirTran Airways, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, US Airways and United Express. We don’t break records without their solid commitment to the market.
Passenger traffic was up on all airlines serving the airport. AirTran Airways (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines) offering nonstop service to Orlando, Tampa, Ft. Myers, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Milwaukee, increased 13 percent compared to April 2011 carrying 74,438 total passengers.  And, beginning June 3, 2012, AirTran will offer a daily nonstop flight to Denver (which will transition to Southwest on August 12, 2012).  Frontier Airlines flying nonstop to Denver was up 32 percent compared to last year. US Airways, with flights to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. (Reagan), increased by 13 percent. Delta, flying to Atlanta and Detroit, and United with flights to Chicago O’Hare, were up 7 percent and 6 percent respectively.  Further, beginning August 12, 2012, Southwest Airlines will offer two daily nonstop trips to Chicago Midway along with replacing AirTran's nonstop flight to Denver. Southwest flights can only be purchased at southwest.com.
