Airlines Raising Fees On Checked Bags

If you've missed the latest announcements on baggage fees, you might want to take notice! Airlines are swimming in a sea of red ink because of rising fuel costs, and they are now looking for ways to increase revenue.  Bet you can't guess where they are looking.  It's at the bag you have with you.  Starting around May 1, several carriers will be charging an additional $25.00 to check more than one bag.  On top of that, overweight bags, 50 pounds or more, will be assessed a $100.00 fee.  It's important to check with your individual carrier for effective dates and fee schedules, but if these fees hold up, I would expect other carriers to follow suit.  Please understand that I'm not necessarily being critical of the move; carriers can't stay in business unless they make a profit. But, it's important for the customer to plan when packing.

Just a reminder. If you try to drag that 200-pound bag as carry-on, airlines also have size restrictions for carry-on bags, and in general allow one carry-on and one personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag.

Obviously, decisions made prior to arriving at CAK might save you dollars so plan accordingly.  Let's face it.  We are all usually guilty of packing more than we need.  So make life easier; just bring less pairs of shorts for that trip to Florida!

Stay tuned for merger mania coming to airlines soon.
