It was with great sadness when I read the article in today's Ohio.com about Fred's passing. I always enjoyed the opportunity to visit with Fred on a variety of issues involving CAK. Fred was kind, intelligent, accommodating and, above all else, always a great interview. His passion for that airport and the industry was hard to hide!:-) I hope all is well with you. I turned in my "on-air" voice and accepted a position last year as Assistant News Director with the NBC affiliate in Chattanooga. I'm enjoying the management challenge and really love Chattanooga. I had opportunities to interview Fred several times as a news reporter for 89.7 WKSU and Rubber City Radio Group. Fred was one of the genuine "good guys" in the Northeast Ohio business community and he'll truly be missed. In light of what he did to improve the Akron-Canton Airport and the entire region's transportation network, the airport board should give serious consideration to renaming the facility in his honor.

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of Fred Krum. Having grown up in the area, not too far from the airport. I have seen the Akron-Canton Airport grow from a very small facility to a major airport, and we can all thank Fred Krum for that transformation. I have only used the airport a couple of times but I have visited there many many times. I personally want to say that I appreciate all the improvements that he has made to the airport. These improvements have made a big impact on the growth in the Akron-Canton area. He was a very professional and dedicated person to the airport, the community and to his family. He will truly be missed and who ever takes his place, at the airport, will have some big shoes to fill. I hope that the airport will continue to grow, and that the airport board will consider either renaming the airport or erect some kind of a memorial to the memory of Mr.Fred Krum. My thoughts and prayers are extended to his family, friends, and co-workers for their loss. My he rest in peace.

I did not know Mr. Fred Crum, however, his impact in the public eye shows that he clearly understood what the public good was all about. He gave us an alternative airport, besides Cleveland Hopkins, to use, by expanding service areas and keeping airline use simple in its design and access. Last but not least, it was "green" thinking that allowed the cutting and bailing of "hay" between the runways! God Bless Mr. Krum, his family and his special intentions.

In years past, whenever I saw Kristie at a conference, Fred was sure to be nearby. It was the "Force de CAK" in full effect! What a tremendously talented and knowledgeable man Fred was, and so personable. He knew firsthand what it meant to transform an airport from a relative unknown to an industry darling. CAK has become a shining example of the success possible through dedication, optimism, tireless effort and a first-class team charting its course. Fred led this charge for nearly 30-years. He is of an elite and esteemed group, and will forever be remembered for all the good he did, and what he represented. The Field of Aviation, and certainly the Akron-Canton Community, is far better for having had such a man to call its own. Fred Krum - You're Cleared for Takeoff...we'll see you later! BLF @ BOI

Our deepest sympathy to the Krum family and everyone at CAK. I never met Fred, but I can tell you he took the sleepy, little airport, served by three airlines with service to five or six cities that I remember flying in and out of during Vietnam, and transformed it into the second fastest growing mid-size airport in the U.S. Remarkably, he achieved this in a region more accustomed to no growth. A true leader and class act, who was well respected by everyone he met and loved by those who worked for him. How rare is that! Keep kicking butt and keep growing CAK.... Fred wouldn't have it any other way!

Fred was a wonderful mentor to many; a true gentleman and professional leader who showed wisdom, compassion, and enthusiasm for his family, his work, and for all of those he served; Chuck and I considered it our good fortune to have known him and worked with him. He was a wonderful friend. I do not believe it was an accident when I arrived in CAK this past Saturday to hear (what I believed to be) Fred's voice over the loud speaker. He was thanking passengers for flying CAK, "a better way to go!" He truly believed it, and we believe it too...We are so proud of Fred and his accomplishments for CAK. To Diane and family,& Fred's CAK family, "May God's promise of eternal life give you peace; you WILL see Fred again!" God bless, Wanda

While prayerfully honoring Fred Krum at his memorial service Friday, I made a promise to Kristie Van Auken, his administrative partner and friend, to share a few thoughts of him. As a former long-time airline employee, I had the privilege of knowing Fred personally. Beginning my tenure at CAK with AMR Services, then United Express carriers, I witnessed firsthand what this man's dynamic leadership along with his capable management partners have done to foster an equally dynamic, growing airport. Though I was not involved directly in the employ of Akron-Canton Airport, I watched from an airline worker's perspective the many changes and projects affecting this micro community of air services, vendors, and government agencies. No matter what our office was, this aviation manager was never too busy to wave at us, preferring to be called Fred rather than Mr. Krum, asking, "How are we doing?" Always interested in gathering airline performance data downstairs as well as up in the offices, we chatted many times at the ticket counter in his congenial, relaxed manner. For a long time, I knew Fred as a caring individual who understood that every employee at the airport was vital to its operation. During particular times when airline offices were positionally shifted during improvement projects, I sensed how he went out of his way to accomodate my own manager, Becky, and all of us as comfortably as possible. Fred Krum exhibited a rare gift of combined administrative finesse and a down to earth charm, sky bent while anchored deep in a place he tried so hard to make an inviting port of call for pilots and a haven for air travelers. History speaks for itself here at Akron-Canton. In the fluid, ever-changing industry of commercial aviation, I remember Fred Krum as a force of grounded strength, calm demeaner, and an unparalled leader in world of aircraft and dynamic, still young, aviation transportation. During one of many media interviews, I recall Fred's idea of operating a major international airport. Who would imagine at the time that he would do even better by transforming a local, twin city airport into an expanded, internationally acclaimed regional facility? That is the legacy of Fred Krum and his proficient team! I extend my thoughts and prayers to Fred's family, the community he touched, and everyone who worked beside him. God gless you and guide you in the days ahead. Sincerely, Greg

It has been my honor and privilege getting to know Fred over the last nine years. Under Fred’s leadership Akron / Canton Airport has gone from an afterthought to one of the most commonly used industry examples of a successful regional airport. Fred’s vision coupled with a lot of hard work was the reason this transformation came to fruition. If you were fortunate enough to know Fred, you know he was always an optimist, but there is no one you would rather have on your side when times are tough. I quickly learned not to underestimate Fred’s dedication and will to ensure AirTran Airways’ success in the marketplace. Fred was at his finest in difficult times especially in the post 9/11 environment. When we presented Fred with a challenge he would always tell me the same thing “whatever it takes”. Many of us at AirTran Airways have had the pleasure to get to know Fred, and we will miss him. Fred’s legacy will live on through the premier team he has built that will serve Akron / Canton Airport well into the future.

I was the US Airways Manager at CAK from 98-2001. I have yet to meet a man to this day, that I admired as much as Fred Krum. On your worst day, he could walk by and pick you up with his enthusiasm and positivity. He was such the professional, and a great Ambassador for CAK and the region. CAK was my first airport as a Manager, and I learned a GREAT deal from Fred. As I soon learned, there are not many Fred Krum's in the aviation business, nor many CAK's out there. CAK was my first, and still favorite place that I have worked. CAK had a truly family atmosphere, and that started with Fred. The world and aviation, was a much better place with Fred Krum. I do take comfort in knowing the Rick McQueen took the reigns. I don't think you could have picked a better successor.
