Flamingos help celebrate flights to Ft. Lauderdale
Posted on 01/10/2008
Boy oh boy, were we up to our necks in flamingos last week! We collaborated with AirTran Airways to place 3,000 flamingos throughout Northeast Ohio, hoping to raise awareness about their nonstop Florida flights to Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Orlando and Tampa. We hid four teal flamingos too and posted clues about their whereabouts on the www.airtran.com website.
Guerilla style marketing like this promotion requires a lot of man (woman) power. It took a team of 26 folks five hours to place 1,600 flamingos. It was a blast… really! The weather was remarkably warm for these parts, aiding our good spirits.
Now here’s the really amazing part, nearly 1,500 of the flamingos had disappeared within two days! I had no idea how popular the little fake feathered birds would be. Well anyway, the promotion was a fun way to kick off the year.
Our many thanks go to the McKinley Memorial Library , the Canton Museum of Art, the City of Canton, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the City of Akron, the Akron Beacon Journal, the Wolstien Center at Cleveland State University, the Galleria, Mercy Medical Center, the Hilton Garden Inn, Thistle Downs Race track, the Akron Zoo and the Akron Aeros for their help in pulling this promotion off.

Happy New Years to my neighbors out at Akron/Canton. Continue the tremendous work you do at your airport. Most airports are jealous of how well you have grown in just a 10 year span, and will continue growing in the future. I have flown it 10+ times in the last couple years, and will continue using it.
Right now my coalition of Airport Supporters are trying to help out the struggling Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. They have done a successful job with flights to Orlando aboard Allegiant Air (ALGT-Nasdaq), but they have not done much since then.
YNG needs to look at how well CAK has done over the years and perhaps take some tips from you guys. You run a very successful operation and should be commended for IT! You earn my award for the best airport in Ohio and the best operation of any government funded operation in the region.
GOOD LUCK IN 2007!
